Exciting competition coming soon!

Look out for a brand new competition to celebrate the April launch of I’ve Got Your Number in paperback and the exciting new hardback Wedding Night.

World Book Night 2012

Happy World Book Night to you all!  How will you be celebrating tonight?  Perhaps with an event at your local library, or curled up with a glass of wine and your favourite book!  I shall be taking a ride on a very special World Book Night Bus to the Southbank Centre, where there are lots of exciting book events happening through the night.
I was so thrilled that The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic was chosen as one of the 25 titles to be given away this year, as it means that many new readers will be given the chance to meet Becky and enjoy her story.  Perhaps they will join us here on my website too!  If you’re one of the fabulous people who’ve signed up to be a book giver this year, I’d love to hear about it! You can share your World Book Night stories here or on my Facebook page.

USA Today gives IGYN a great review!

USA Today gives a great review of I’ve Got Your Number today, receiving 3 out of 4 stars!  The reviewer compares Maddy’s writing to “a box of Valentine’s Day chocolates. A pleasurable if guilty indulgence that can be entirely devoured in a single sitting if one doesn’t heed the clock – or the bathroom scale.”

‘You can be highly intelligent – and also ditzy and klutzy’

With her Shopaholic series of novels, Sophie Kinsella is the quintessential chick-lit writer. Is she offended by the label? And why does she write about women who are obsessed with handbags?

What do we think about chick lit? It’s a question that has been on a sort of literary loop for about 15 years. Harmless escapism? Cynical commercialism? Post-feminism at its most depressingly inane? Or is it an insult to the intelligence of women who like to read and write about contemporary female lives? If Jane Austen were alive today, would her books come in pink sparkly covers? If glitter sells, should we even care? Does chick lit propagate a retrograde notion of women as shallow cretins – or reflect their nuanced reality? And on and on it goes.

Find out what Sophie has to say on the matter in her interview with Decca Aitkenhead on The Guardian website.

40 Love – Coming soon to North America

Hello to all my North American readers!
As you probably know, the first book I ever wrote, back when I wrote under the name Madeleine Wickham, was The Tennis Party. It was re-released in the UK earlier this summer and now it’s coming out in the US under the fun title 40 Love.
I was filmed on court especially to tell you all about it, so have a look at the video here.
The book is going to be published on the 30th August and is available to pre-order now.
As for me, I’m off to practise my smash!

Sophie on… Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton: The princess bride
We live in a world of “now!” Easy credit, instant gratification, do it yesterday. Patience seems a virtue long forgotten. So feathery hats off to Kate Middleton and her measured, dignified bearing over the last eight years. As any young woman knows, it’s hard enough to strew off questions from friends and family members when one is in a relationship.
(“So? Any…news?”)
Imagine having to put up with it from the entire world. Once upon a time, potential princesses were born to the role, trained from birth and swapped among European states in a blue-blooded members’ only club. These days, royalty, like greatness, can be thrust upon you as a result of simply chatting up that handsome chap at the university bar.
Somehow, Kate Middleton, from a relatively normal family, has handled it all beautifully. She and William must know each other well by now, and they must feel confident that their marriage will work. I hope the joy is all the sweeter for her after such a patient wait.
